Last day in Vienna!

Thursday August 7th,

Our last full day in Vienna. Tomorrow we move out to an airport hotel in order to catch a very early flight to Paris on Saturday.

Today we just strolled. Our first stop was the Gerstner Cafe - along the lines of life is short eat dessert first - we tried the house torte, yummy!! It is one of the oldest cafes and has the distinction of being the dessert makers for the Imperial Palace!

Yummy!

We decided to walk to the Naschmarkt for lunch.  As we were walking we came across several people with helmets and headlamps walking down steps going underground. Bizarre - we moved closer and discovered that this was a tour of the Vienna Sewer System !

What's up with people wearing helmets going underground

You really can't appreciate the smell. They paid to go down there?

Internet explanation:

"In 1949, Orson Welles made famous the role of Harry Lime in the British film, ‘The Third Man,’ written by novelist Graham Greene. On this city walking tour, explore Vienna's Old Town as you follow Harry’s footsteps to locations from the film. You’ll also see some of Vienna’s top sights such as St Stephen's Cathedral and Hotel Sacher as your expert guide takes you back more than 60 years to the fascinating time of post-WWII espionage"

Third Man Tour
We had read about all the things to do in Vienna related to this movie. It was on Netflix when we were in Toronto, so, perfect opportunity to watch it! We tried twice and after about twenty minutes we gave up, just not our cup of tea.

We carried on and walked around the market, had lunch and then walked over to the Secession Building and then to the Albertina Museum, home of the pink hare.

Some random pics of the day.

Looks happy to be serving ice cream all day!!

Arnold stopped to get some of these during Terminator Three.

  1. Sounds like you had a great time. We love Vienna. Did you get to take the ferry through the Wachau Valley to Melk. That is a great trip and a wonderful cathedral to see.
Make sure you get the sound track to the movie 'The Third Man.' Just kidding - those who've seen the film will know what I mean.
