Canal du Nivernais, Day 3, Chatillon en Bazois

Day Three

The locks do not open until 9 am which makes for a leisurely start to our day.  The Royals continued to have generator problems so they stayed put and were waiting for a mechanic to come and fix the problem. Gotta love boating when you just make a call and someone comes running and you don't get the bill! I did not mention that when we pulled up to the bank last night both Clipper 2 and us ran aground. Made for a worry free night knowing that we weren't going to move. But, seriously there is little to worry about, there is no tide, no real current, the canal is 50 feet wide and the boat has fenders surrounding it. So, even if we were not aground and even if the stakes had not held we would merely bounce off the bank.
Along with Clipper 2 we left the bank and headed out for the day. Our aim was to make  Chatillon en Bazois for the market the next day!
Along the way we encountered all types of locks and lockkeepers. I have to say that the ones run by the women are the prettiest by far. The flowers are magnificent. They tend to help you more and often had things for sale. Honey, wine, jam, potatoes and one had chocolate cake for a euro. We ran into several students who are doing this as a part time job and we even had one RAF - rude arrogant frenchman. He had his gates closed and IMO made himself unavailable to help with the lines! Oh well, we managed.
We arrived in Chatillon and most of the gang went into town for dinner.

This morning we rode into the market. It was pretty small but we managed to find a cooked chicken, cheese and of course a stop at the patisserie.  Due to the fact that we all have laundry to do and this town is pretty small we have decided to move on and find a laverie automatique!

More pictures to follow as soon as we get internet!

Serene scenery at every bend.

Bing bang bing - three consecutive locks. No rest for the wicked!
Sid and George to the rescue.

Sid and George hard at work - well George is , Sids turn is coming.

Years ago Garth and I termed this "Random acts of senseless art."  It brightens the countryside and your day.

Random acts of senseless art to brighten our day along the way.

Terri hard at work .

Mr. Lock keeper.
